Do You Have to Be Irish to Study Irish Paganism?
Jan 05, 2026
This is probably the question we're asked most often at Irish Pagan School - do I have to be Irish to study here? - and it deserves a direct answer rather than a diplomatic evasion.
No, you don't have to be Irish to study Irish Paganism.
The Irish Pagan School has over 48,000 students from over 60 countries, and the vast majority of them have no Irish ancestry at all. What draws people here is genuine interest in the tradition, in the mythology, the history, the spiritual practice, and the living culture it comes from.

But there's a question underneath that question, and that's the one that matters more: what are you here to do with what you learn?
The distinction that actually matters
If you're here to learn, to understand, to practise in your own life in a way that respects the tradition and the culture it comes from, then no, being Irish isn't a prerequisite.
Intellectual and spiritual engagement with any tradition can and does happen across cultural lines.
If you're here because you want to teach others, package and sell this tradition, or position yourself as an authority on Irish spirituality, then that's a different situation entirely, and it's not something we support at IPS regardless of your heritage.
What is cultural appropriation in this context?
Cultural appropriation in the context of Irish Paganism isn't simply about where you were born. It's about the dynamic of extraction: taking from a living tradition, stripping it of its context, and profiting from it without accountability to the community or culture it comes from.

That dynamic can happen regardless of ancestry, and it's the dynamic we ask people to examine honestly.
Ireland's tradition has been suppressed and distorted by centuries of colonisation. The recovery and practice of authentic Irish spirituality is ongoing work, led by Irish people in Ireland, and when outside voices rush to commodify that work, it undermines the recovery.
What right relationship actually looks like
Right relationship means coming as a student and a practitioner, not as a cultural entrepreneur. It means learning from native sources for your personal spiritual growth (in the spirit it is offered), citing them honestly, and not positioning yourself as a teacher of this tradition.
It means supporting the people doing the actual cultural work. It means ongoing learning rather than a certificate you display once and forget.
At the Irish Pagan School, we hold that standard for everyone, Irish or not. The tradition is for living in, not for selling, and if that's the kind of practitioner you want to be, you're welcome here.
